Homemade Love Story ep 49-60

Now that we’re right in the middle of the drama, I feel that the story is starting to drag a little bit. The only highlight of these 12 episodes are Hae Deun and Jun A!

Meanwhile, the main story about Park Pil Hong and the grandma the past is starting to get annoying!! All the more I feel like Park Pil Hong is also a victim of Grandma’s schemes. I hate that Grandma loves Seo Ah (who is not even her flesh and blood) more than Chae Woon. And I hate that she can boldly lie in front of Jungwon and everyone as if she is the wrong one! Grr!

Likewise, everytime I see Seo Ah and Naro together I just want to gag. I really don’t like them. Naro professing he loves Seo Ah is too fake and Seo Ah is too dumb and unloved to actually fall for it.

Korean Pork Belly Rhapsody (2021)

TV Show: Korean Pork Belly Rhapsody (한국 삼겹살 랩소디)
Network: Netflix
Genres: Documentary
Release Date: 4 January 2021
Episodes: 2
Country: South Korea
Language: Korean

For the pork lovers, meat lovers, cooks, and just about everyone who loves to eat delicious food.

When I was a kid, i loved pork. I would choose pork over beef or chicken. But as i grew older, I have lessened my pork intake to only when I’m craving for a certain pork dish (like adobo, lechon) or when i just want to pause from eating chicken. Watching the process of how they use all the different parts of the pork and cooking them in so many ways was so satisfying.

Episode 1 mostly centered on the different ways to cook samgyeopsal or pork belly. The video is Ultra 4k so i was salivating as i see them grill the pork belly and watch the pork fat drip 😍 The last scene in episode 2 where they ate oven baked crispy pork belly looked so similar to our own lechon kawali or boneless lechon belly I’m surprised they haven’t thought of cooking it before. I only eat pork belly once in a while, i prefer the other parts of the pork so i enjoyed watching episode 2.

Episode 2 showed the other parts of the pork, like grilling pork tenderloin, pork and rice soup, sundae soup, braised pork tail, jokbal (pig’s feet), head meat, jamon. Im surprised they didnt have a section on bossam. Yummy!! 🥰 I think we eat every part like they do, but we like to fry everything (like pork cheeks) or put in a sizzling plate (like sisig).

It was also interesting that just like pinoys, when there’s a special occasion, they just go slaughter a pig and have a feast. For us it’s lechon (roasting the entire pig), for them it’s cooking the pig under the fire or boiling them.

I dont think they have exhausted all ways on how to cook pork. They havent tried our crispy pata (deep frying the pig trotters — they boil or braise them instead). And largely because of difference in culture and produce, we have our own menudo or afritada (using tomato sauce), sinigang (sour soup), Hamonado, ginataan (using coconut milk) and binagoongan (using shrimp paste) to name a few.

The taste of meat is evaluated by three different factors.  First, the sense of taste, which you feel on the tongue. Then theres the flavor you can smell with your nose. Lastly the texture as you chew.

Don’t watch on an empty stomach or you’ll be binge eating after (just like what I’m about to do now) 🤣

Extreme Job (2019)

Movie: Extreme Job (극한직업)
Release Date: January 23, 2019
Runtime: 111 min.
Distributor: CJ Entertainment
A police undercover mission takes a delicious turn when the chicken restaurant they are using as a stakeout becomes popular because of their chicken!
Main Cast
Ryu Seung Ryong – Squad Chief Go
Lee Honey – Detective Jang
Jin Seon Kyu – Det. Ma
Lee Dong Hwi – Det. Young Ho
Gong Myung – Det. Jae Hoon
Shin Ha Kyun – Lee Moo Bae
Oh Jung Se – Ted Chang
Yay another Ryu Seung Ryong movie that is fun to watch! He has been a consistent box office hit year after year! I love that this movie mixed action/cop genre with a little comedy. It was too funny seeing these detectives become so busy running a fried chicken store. I actually wished that they continued the fried chicken store. I mean, Chief Go used his money to buy the place. So it just makes sense for him to continue it. He can put the wife in charge and share some of the profits to Det. Ma who invented the recipe.
All through out the show, it seemed like the team were losers but turns out they were so good at fighting! Laughed at the “zombie” monicker of Chief Go and the full fight scene with Shin Ha Kyun on the boat!
This movie is available in Netflix so try to watch this movie during the weekend! Be prepared to get hungry at seeing all the fried chicken though! Yummy!

Jung Gun Joo – Lee Do Hwa
Kim Young Dae – Oh Namju
Lee Na Eun – Yeo Juda

I keep seeing a lot of tweets gushing over this drama so i tried watching the first episode.. and couldn’t stop. Lol. As i previously said, I’m not a big school kdrama fan because i feel that I’m too old to watch them but this was a nice and emotional drama to watch. i also loved the fantasy part about them being comic book characters. We get to see the characters interact in the stage (as part of the comic book story), the shadow (like the regular lives) and some of them in the sageuk world (in their previous lives).. whew!! sometimes i do get a little confused if i’m watching the shadow or stage. I guess this is how actors feel when they are acting. In the movie or drama, they act following the script but once the director says “Cut!”, they go back to the normal lives. This isn’t your typical high school drama because the stakes are high for them, especially for Dano and Haru. They can be removed from the comic book if they do something wrong because they are extras and especially for Dano, she has a heart disease and she can die anytime.

The best thing about the drama is the relationship between Dano and Haru. Baek Kyung didn’t even stand a chance. In the first place Baek Kyung is such as a$$ to Dano in the stage, which is something he can’t do, but when he became self-aware, he didn’t change. He was still an a$$ to Dano. I know they said that when a boy likes you, he is mean to you, but Baek Kyung took it one notch higher and was just hateful. On the other hand, Haru was the sweetest, cutest boy. He always has a smile on his face and has a calm voice. He waits patiently and loves deeply. this is Dano and Haru’s first love but i’m surprised that their love is real. Really felt for them when one disappeared and reappeared with no memory. and it happened to the other one. and yet they always find a way to each other. I also loved their ending when both of them became extras with no name. That means no one will bother them, and they can go about their ways without the “writer” interfering.

Back to Baek Kyung, it’s a good thing that i watched Lee Jae Wook and totally adored him in Search WWW, otherwise, i wouldn’t be able to stomach the character and the actor. I think there were some parts where I’m confused as to what Baek Kyung is feeling, because he always came out angry. I tried to look for some vulnerability so that I can somehow understand him and feel pity for him, but i just couldn’t. Even in the end when he finally realized it was him to killed Dano and he eventually gave up his feelings, i still didn’t feel sad. I just thought, “finally he did the right thing.”

The next character that i really loved is Do Hwa. Oh, he is such a cutiepie and so funny! he kept complaining that he keeps on playing the violin and crying. LOL. On one hand, I feel so bad that he didn’t get the girl but after how Juda acted, I was relieved that he didn’t get the girl. He deserved so much better than her. I also can’t understand how Namju, Kyung and Dohwa were friends in the stage when they didn’t really have a lot of interaction, except for the cliche high school runway walk they do (haha! i can’t help but laugh everytime i see this scene with the background music).

On to the supposed main leads of the comic book, Namju and Juda. i guess this is how the writer was making fun of the heirs or boys over Flowers and all the silly school dramas. Namju’s attitude was too much. No excuse for him acting like such a jerk to Juda and expecting her to fall in love with him when he treats her really bad. and he doesn’t even look like Lee Minho!!! As for Juda, I thought i liked her at first, i was excited for her to be self-aware then when she did, i was so disappointed because she became as much a big bully as her bullies are. Which is not a good thing or lesson. I know we should stand up for ourselves but Juda was just too much. it totally made sense for Juda to end up with Namju because they matched well together. and Juda is right, Namju needs her. Do hwa wouldn’t be able to handle shadow Juda, he will probably be horrified once he finds out how Juda is.

I loved the sageuk story, because it gave the background and whole meaning of what happened between Dano, Haru and Kyung. There were some parts of the drama but was repetitive from the stage and shade and trumpet flower, which dragged the show a little bit but it’s okay, better this than rushing the story. One thing I didn’t understand is if Dano is really an extra then why does she have a big story with Kyung, who was a side character? and why she gets special treatment by the writer? I didn’t feel like she was an extra. her 2 best friends and the bullies are extras i understand, but not Dano. whatever moves she make doesn’t even impact the main story of Namju, Juda and Dohwa. this is the only confusing part for me.

Overall, i loved this drama, i recommended it to my friend who also loved the show. Like what Dano said – She may be an extra in someone’s life, but that’s okay because in her relationship with Haru, they are each other’s main leads. I also loved what Haru said, “Two extras who were living normally have met and are making their own special moments”. The symbolism of the writer for me is Life. Yes, we can live the life we want but also be careful because one extra or wrong step can result in different consequences and we need to be accountable and responsible for our actions. But life moves on and forward and we just need to learn how to coexist in this world.

Love Alarm Season 1 (2019)

Drama: Love Alarm (좋아하면 울리는)
Network: Netflix
Episodes: 8
Release Date: August 22, 2019
A new cellphone app is causing a frenzy among the people. If someone likes you and they are within 10 meters of you, the Joalarm for the app rings. The app also shows how many people like you, but the app doesn’t reveal specific details on who likes you. Kim JoJo is a pretty, smart but poor high school student who tries to leave a simple life just working hard to earn a living for herself. On the other hand, Hwang Sun-O is a popular handsome student at the same high school where Kim Jo-Jo attends. He is the son of a wealthy family, but he is not loved by his parents. His best friend Lee Hye-Young also attends the same high school. Hwang Sun-O notices that his best friend Lee Hye-Young likes Kim Jo-Jo. Hwang Sun-O wants to know if his friend really likes her, so he kisses her.
Main Cast
Kim So-hyun – Kim Jojo
Song Kang – Hwang Sun-O
Jung Ga-ram – Lee Hye-young
I watched this way back in August when this first came out in Netflix and i was as addicted and hooked as everyone else! I haven’t watched a kdrama about high schoolers for so long cause I find them juvenile now, but this was just so much fun and angsty to watch? You dont need to ask me if I’m Team Sun Oh or Team Hye Young! Of course I’m Team Sun Oh! I know some are saying he was such a jerk for “stealing” Jo Jo away from Hye Young when he knows how much his best friend likes her, but (i’m not defending him) he asked Hye Young several times if he liked her and he always said no, and i thought it was love at first sight, not just for him but for JoJo as well. They obviously like each other so why can’t they be together? Jojo never liked Hye Young (mostly dont even know him) so no one was stealing anyone. All’s fair in love and war right? And Hye Young is a creepy stalker!! Followed her around without her knowing and was too shy and coward to talk to her and tell her how he feels. Sun Oh made his intentions known and wasn’t afraid to go all out for her.But what about the boyfriend? it was quite obvious that Jojo and the boyfriend was so over and it didn’t take long for them to break up. I didn’t like Jojo’s best friend- trying to be all nice but was actually backstabbing Jojo because she liked Jojo’s boyfriend! I’m glad the boyfriend turned her down- serves her right for being an awful friend.I could understand why Jojo broke up with Sun Oh after the accident – she must really feel terrible that she seems to be putting Sun Oh in danger and getting him in all sorts of trouble. and Jojo is sensible enough to break up before her feelings gets even deeper. They’re in high school – they will get over this and move on. Right?

But poor Sun Oh. he never got over her. and i think it’s mostly because he never got closure. Years later, they finally meet again but Sun Oh is icy cold and angry.. but still ringing Jojo’s love alarm (what a sad puppy). I’m sure Jojo is really resisting to fall in love with him again. Now Hye Young is back too and this time is older and has finally found the courage to go after Jojo. Who will Jojo choose? Her first love that made her feel alive or this nice comfortable guy who has been there for her all this time?

Aside from the love triangle, the drama also explores the impact of the Joalarm to the society. How sad and lonely people feel when no one rings their alarm and they resort to suicide. It’s scary to think how much people feels pressure to be liked and loved. Why can’t we go back to the old time when life was simple? Do we really have to complicate things and set this standards that are so high and is becoming toxic?

I can’t wait for season 2! I know Jojo ended up with Hye Young in the comic book but with the way the first season was written, there was no indication that Jojo ever liked Hye Young so i hope she either ends up with Sun Oh or the writer better give us the reason why she should be with Hye Young. (Sun Oh is hard to beat though – he is rich, handsome and actually a nice guy).
